WELLS, WHEELER, SNIDER, HINES, BROWNFIELD, PURKHISER, KILLINGSWORTH, HAYS, PENDLEY, HILL, JONES, MORRIS, HARRIS, AND MANY MORE.
"I like that Oklahoma. I'd like to live there someday"
That's what my great grandfather William Wells said after riding through Oklahoma with a Confederate cavalry unit during the civil war. He finnaly got his wish but not until 1907 when the family left Paris, Texas and headed north across the Red river. The old timers always said they arrived in Okla. on the day of statehood. Those who made the trip were my great grandparent's William and Tennessee (Wheeler) Wells. Also with them were my grandparent's Albert Clay and Byantha Carrena (Snider) Wells and their children Gracie and Emma. They had 7 more children after moving to Okla. one of which was my father Floyd Henry Wells. Having arrived in the new state of Okla. they settled in the rural community of Wallville near Lindsay Okla. Lindsay is about 50 miles south of Oklahoma City in Garvin county. Why they chose that particular area I do not know. I wish now I had asked the older folks more questions while they were still around. They made their living the way most folks did at the time. Farming, raising livestock, and a huge garden. I don't know if they were renters or sharecroppers but, I don't believe they owned their land. My grandfather Albert Clay Wells died in 1941 ten years before I was born. My grandmother Byantha Carrena (Snider) Wells died in 1962 when I was only ten years old.but, I have fond memories of that very kind and gentle lady. I remember being there when she died. The old family Dr. (Dr. Pool) was called to the home she shared with my aunt's Fannie and Gearldine. After checking my grandmother for vital sign's he said simply, " She lived a beautiful life". Dr. Pool delivered my sister Vickie Darlene Wells on Sept. 26 1950 and then delivered me (Floyd Leon Wells) on Sept. 15, 1951. My half sister Judith Diane (Hill) Gust was born Sept. 7, 1946. I say half sister only to be correct. When you grow up with someone you don't think of them as half anything (SHES MY SISTER). At any rate seeing as we were all born in Sept. the cold month of January must have been a busy time for the folk's around our house. Judy (Judith) is my sister on my mother's side. I also had two half brother's on my fathers side. They were Lloyd Ray Wells and, Paul David Wells. As they were much older than me I never knew them very well.
